The Ruff.

A small device that clips to your dog's existing collar and reads six signals of pain. The Tether app shows you what it found, what is likely causing it, and what to do about it.

A subtle limp before it is visible.

Vocalization

The sounds that signal pain, fear, or anxiety.

Vibration

Scratching, shaking, and tremor.

The intelligence

Steps don't matter. Pain does.

The Ruff is not a fitness tracker. It gives your dog a pain score from 0 to 100, measured against his own normal rather than a breed average, and the Tether app tells you what the score means and what to do.

Insight

Pain climbs for about 2 hours after afternoon play, 4 of the last 7 days. Reads as exercise stress, not an injury.

Scout suggests

A quiet 20 minute window after play and a warm compress on his hips. Flag it if it holds above 35 for 2 days.

Evening pain spike
What happened
Pain score rises to 28 to 32 in the 2 hours after her afternoon play window. Happens 4 of the last 7 days.
Pain score, last 7 days
Why it matters
Exercise-induced micro-stress in middle-aged hound mixes. Not baseline pain, not an injury. Her body is working harder to recover than it was a month ago.
What to do
Give her a quiet window
20 minutes of calm after play, before dinner.
Warm compress on her hips
10 minutes helps the recovery signal drop faster.
Flag it if it holds
If the spike stays above 35, or past 3 hours for 2 days, log it for the vet.

Scout
Babs is doing well today. Pain is holding at 22, just below her baseline of 24.
Why does she seem stiff after the park?
Her pain climbs to the low 30s for about 2 hours after afternoon play, 4 of the last 7 days. That is exercise-induced micro-stress, not an injury. A short quiet window and a warm compress on her hips help her settle faster.
Should I be worried?
Not right now. I will flag it if the spike stays above 35 for 2 days in a row, or if it starts lasting longer than 3 hours.

Questions

Good to know.

The Ruff is a small device that clips to your dog's existing collar. It spots pain early, explains what is likely causing it, and tells you what to do, in plain language.

It reads six signals around the clock, movement, gait, sounds, vibration, temperature, and breathing, and compares them to your dog's own normal. When something moves off that normal, the app gives you a pain score, the likely reason, and a next step.

Yes. The first week is spent learning your dog's normal. After a month the score is tuned to him rather than to a breed average, and after six months you can see the long trend, which is where slow problems like arthritis first show. It starts from breed reference ranges on day one, so it is useful from the start and sharper with time.

No. Step counts and activity badges do not tell you when your dog is hurting. The Ruff is built around pain, not activity.

We recommend The Ruff for dogs 20 lbs and up. The fit on the collar and the readings are tuned for that size, so we do not suggest it for smaller dogs yet.

No. The Ruff clips onto the collar your dog already wears, so there is nothing else to buy.

$299 once for the device, plus the Tether app at $8.99 a month or $82.88 a year, with your first 3 months of the app included. The device senses and the app does the thinking, so you need both.

First units ship in November 2026, and units go out in the order people joined the waitlist, so joining now holds your place in line. Demand has outrun what we can build at once, so some units may ship a little later than that, and if the timing moves we will tell you first. It is an estimate rather than a promise.
